The Active Immunization of Sheep against Oestrone, Androstenedione or Testosterone to Increase Twinning
نویسندگان
چکیده
Procedures have been developed to produce consistent increases in ovulation rate in Merino ewes by immunization against the steroids, androstenedione, testosterone and oestrone. The procedures were based on experiments in the field over the period 1978-1981 using groups of 50 ewes for each treatment. The method uses selected steroid-human serum albumin conjugates, together with DEAEdextran adjuvant, administered subcutaneously in two treatments, three weeks apart. Joining with rams then commences three to five weeks later. With Merino ewes, increases in ovulation rate of 0.2 to 0.4 can be obtained whilst maintaining full oestrus. This results in increases in lambing rate of about 20%, essentially confined to twins.

Improvement of litter size (lambs bprn/ewes lambing) in sheep is difficult for several reasons. The experimental results on direct selection for litter size, coupled with generally low estimates of genetic parameters of litter size led to widespread interest in the use of indirect selection criteria for genetic improvement of litter size. It has been argued that ovulation rate is the main limit...
متن کاملEffects of immunization against androstenedione or bone morphogenetic protein 15 (BMP15) on reproductive performance in sheep.
Partial neutralization of bone morphogenetic protein 15 (BMP15) bioactivity by immunization is known to increase ovulation rate in sheep. However, it remains uncertain whether BMP15 vaccination would be a suitable procedure for increasing lambing rate. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of a BMP15 vaccination treatment on lamb production to that of commercially-available androste...

(Received 27th November 1974) Studies on the sheep have provided more information concerning the hormonal changes that precede parturition than those on any other mammal. The implications of some of the findings are uncertain but a composite picture is gradually emerging. The ability of sheep placenta to convert C19-steroids to oestrogens (Ainsworth & Ryan, 1966; Pierrepoint, Anderson, Griffith...

The endocrinological changes of the climacteric have been defined by studying the concentrations of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinising hormone (LH), androstenedione, testosterone, oestrone, and oestradiol in 60 normal postmenopausal women of different menopausal ages. The women were studied in six groups, according to the number of years since their menopause. One year after the me...
